Tesla Bots
Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, unveiled the Tesla Bot, which is a humanoid robot that runs on the same artificial intelligence as the company’s self-driving cars. It was a prototype of a “slightly creepy” self-lacing robot during a presentation at an AI Day event. The device was revealed during the company’s annual conference. “Basically, if you think about what we’re doing right now with cars, Tesla is arguably the world’s biggest robotics company because our cars are like semi-sentient robots on wheels,” Musk said. “With the Full Self-Driving computer, which will keep evolving, and Dojo and all the neural nets recognizing the world, understanding how to navigate through the world, it kind of makes sense to put that on to a humanoid form.” When Tesla this was announced in August 2021, some people took it as a joke, especially since it was previewed by a dancing human being dressed to resemble the Tesla Bot. But Musk took it as a challenge and wants to develop its prototype in 2022. It is name as Optimus.
So the question arises that what will this bot be used for? Will it create a scarcity of jobs for humans?
The answer is yes but also no. Musk has said before that the first job for Optimus would most likely be at Tesla factories. Also the purpose of this bot will be to aid humans in various things like opening the door for you, or to bring a glass of water, or even switching the lights on/off, the bot will be serving the purpose of doing daily chores, which are at some point dangerous, repetitive, boring, etc. It will dissolve the stressful life of humans.
Some details about the bot:
The Bot is made up of lightweight materials. The Robot stands at 5 foot 8 inches tall, is expected to weigh around 125 lbs, and reportedly has a carrying capacity of up to 45 lbs. It also has a screen upfront for getting useful information and contains 40 electromechanical actuators. The interesting fact is that the cameras that fit into this robot are the ones Tesla uses in its cars i.e the autopilot cameras. It has an FSD computer on which it runs and many more minor functionalities which are very useful. The greatest thing will be it will be easy to use and is user-friendly.
Elon Musk also mentioned that a prototype of the Bot would be available by next year. It seems pretty obvious that the Bot’s pricing will be touching the skies, but it still is going to be the first-ever humanoid robot that will be made available to people. Interestingly, Musk is imagining this as replacing much of the human drudge work that currently occupies so many people’s lives — not just labor but things like grocery shopping and other everyday tasks. He waxed about a future in which physical work would be a choice, with all the attendant implications that might mean for the economy. Just remember, Tesla is not the only automaker, or even company, to produce a humanoid robot. Honda’s Asimo robot has been around for decades and it’s incredibly advanced. Toyota and GM also have their own robots, so why are we so hyped about Tesla’s? Is it just because it’s Tesla? Or is it because of this potentially really powerful vision-based supercomputer that will be powering it? Who knows if anything will ever come of this humanoid robot, but we shall remain entertained by Tesla updates until such time as we can buy one of these things in a store and take it home to buy our eggs for us. Now that’s an AI utopia.
